Mental toughness is a phrase used routinely in sport and performance. Most coaches and athletes say it all the time, and tell you to be “mentally tough.” But have they ever told you how – specifically – to be mentally tough? This breakout session will give an overview of and discuss key aspects related to the “how” of mental toughness…because knowing “what” is great, but only if you know the “how.”

6 . Goal Setting & Motivation for Peak Performance - Jeff Jourdan, SportPsych101
Goal Setting and Motivation are directly related to one another. Research shows that athletes who set goals for themselves are more likely to achieve and be successful in sport and in life. This breakout session will describe key components of goal setting and motivation. You will leave this session with a better understanding of how to set goals in such a way that your desired results take care of themselves.

7 . Relaxation Training for Peak Performance - Jeff Jourdan, SportPsych101
Do you get nervous in pressure situations? Do you not get “up” for those less important games/competitions? Don’t tell your coaches I called some games “less important” – but let’s face it, this happens (even to world-class athletes). Relaxation training is directly related to arousal control. How you control your own arousal before, during, and after competition affects your performance. This breakout session will teach you the basics of arousal control for peak performance, via Progressive Muscle Relaxation (PMR). This is a technique commonly used in preparation for and during competition, so that you can create an optimal arousal level for peak performance.

8 . Think Before You Post - Kevin Horrigan, Greenfield-Central High School
Cell phones, texting, face book, blogs, twittering – what you put out there can place you at risk now and in the future. Student-athletes need to think before they post. This session will focus on current technology, and what student athletes should be aware of as they use these tools.

9 . Hazing - Elliot Hopkins, NFHS Assistant Executive Director

What types of activities in your school and community are available for you and your team to participate in? A recent study was done to prove students who maintain a weekly community service record 85% of the time are more likely to succeed and have a higher grade point average than those who do none at all.
